Sunday, we drove up into Oregon's Coast Range Mountains to hunt for crystals and look for faeries. It was Bear's birthday weekend, afterall, and he and I have a tradition of heading up into the wild. Our entire little family headed out into the wild and by the end of the trip, Bear had declared, "Dad! We've seen some really cool stuff today!"
We started up in the The Nestucca River Valley and I showed everyone where I had done my vision quest back in approximately 1992. We stood on the ledge where I'd done my ritual work, looking down at our car, "Zen," far, far below.

At the base of the cliff below my ledge there are scattered clusters of quartz crystals. I hadn't taken the kids there in a couple of years, so we browsed through the rock slides, looking for treasures. Veins of thick, white quartz are plentiful, but clear quartz crystals are rare. In the midst of our search, Bear remarked, "Hey, Dad! We've been here before." I agreed that they had and the search continued until we'd all found several pieces to take home with us.

After a stop along the coast to photograph a site I shared in the article Seeking Direction and Turning Keys (Bear was at my side the entire time, thrilled to be exploring sea spouts and cliff faces - Sparrow chose to wait in the car), we headed inland to stop at an old quarry that I'd adopted as my first sacred site. Both Bear and Sparrow were thrilled to be exploring the places where we'd seen faeries and were very impressed with the faerie ring that recently appeared in the upper quarry.

At last, we headed for home, stopping at Bear's favorite Chinese resturaunt to celebrate his birthday. It was a good day.
